Our mission

Quite simply, our mission is to make West Edinburgh a better place to be. We are doing this by providing a space where people can meet, connect with each other, spend time together and support each other.

We believe everyone has something they can offer and give to others.

We believe communities are built one relationship at a time.

We believe that the world is a better place when the focus is on what is strong about people and places rather than what is wrong.

The space

Previously a Burger King restaurant, the space is large, fully accessible and has views over the Pentland Hills. With the use of furniture and shelving it is divided into three zones

  1. private space at the back for meetings and group activities. This can hold approx 15 people

  2. cafe style area with comfy chairs and coffee tables for meet-ups and individual working

  3. reception area for welcoming people and permanent or ad hoc information stands

There is also plenty of clean wall space for community exhibitions, an accessible open air balcony and storage space.

Cost

The running costs for The Space to Be are minimal, but we do want the place to be warm, well lit and clean. We operate on a give-what-you-can basis and don’t want to exclude anyone on the grounds of cost. Please do get in touch to chat further about this.

Management

Corstorphine Old Parish Church holds the licence to manage the space as a community venture. The project leader is the Workplace Chaplain for West Edinburgh, Esther Elliott. Day to day and strategic management is done by a small group of representatives from groups and organisations which use the space.

Security

We want the Space to Be to be a safe and inclusive environment and therefore expect all staff and volunteers to be able to deal with the majority of difficult situations. If they can’t then the Centre security guards may be able to help.

Opening hours

You can book to use the space at any time while the Gyle is usually open, depending on what other events and groups are already present. The normal opening hours for the Gyle are:

Mon - Fri 9am-8pm

Sat 9am-6pm

Sun 10am-6pm

Restrictions

The Space to Be is in a commercial unit which is above a bank, next door to a food outlet and opens out onto a public food court. When thinking about using the space for activities please be aware that the Gyle Centre management need to take into account anything with might affect these commercial enterprises in terms of noise, safety etc
